Care Tips for Your Ecosystem: How to Keep Your Little Universe Healthy

Eccosmo ecosystems are fascinating, self-contained mini-ecosystems that can thrive with minimal effort. To ensure your ecosystem remains healthy for a long time, there are a few important points to consider. In this article, you'll learn all about optimal placement, lighting conditions, and temperature – and what to do if you have questions.

1. The Right Location: Where does your ecosystem feel most comfortable?

To ensure your ecosystem maintains a stable and healthy balance, you should choose its location carefully. Here are some tips:

  • No direct sunlight: Do not place your ecosystem in direct sunlight, as this can overheat the water and uncontrollably increase algae growth.
  • Not near a window: Your ecosystem should not be placed directly by a window, as it requires very little light.
  • No strong temperature changes: Avoid radiators, air conditioners, or other sources that could cause sudden temperature fluctuations.

2. The Right Lighting: Natural or artificial?

Light is crucial for the biological balance of your ecosystem. The algae living within it produce oxygen and serve as food for the shrimp.

  • Little light required: Your ecosystem needs very little light to maintain a stable balance.
  • No direct lighting necessary: If your ecosystem is in a darker location, normal room light is often sufficient.
  • Avoid too much light: Excessive algae growth is often a sign of too much light. If your ecosystem turns green, reduce the lighting duration or change its location.
  • Natural vs. artificial lighting: Natural light contains a broad spectrum that promotes algae, while artificial light sources are often more controlled. Cool LED lighting can limit algae growth, while warmer light sources (like incandescent bulbs) can stimulate algae growth more.

3. The Optimal Temperature: Not too warm, not too cold

Temperature plays a crucial role in the well-being of your ecosystem:

  • Ideal temperature: Between 18 and 25 degrees Celsius.
  • No extreme conditions: Temperatures below 15°C or above 30°C can disturb the delicate balance.
  • Avoid temperature peaks: Make sure your ecosystem is not in places with strong temperature fluctuations (e.g., a windowsill above a radiator or next to an air conditioner).

4. Care and Maintenance: Does my ecosystem need cleaning?

One of the best things about an ecosystem is that it is self-contained and almost maintenance-free. Nevertheless, there are a few things you can do:

  • Do not shake or move: An ecosystem is a delicate balance. Avoid strong movements, as this can cloud the water and disturb the shrimp's habitat.
  • Observe algae growth: A slight green tint is normal, but excessive algae growth can indicate too much light.
  • Condensation: If too much moisture builds up on the inside, this is a sign of temperature differences inside and outside the ecosystem. This can happen even with small fluctuations and is usually harmless.
  • Cleaning with the internal magnet: In the manual, you will find the external magnet that you can use to attract the small magnet in the gravel of the ecosystem. This can remove deposits from the inside of the glass. This cleaning is not necessary but can be done if needed.
