About 6 years ago, we switched from ecosystems with natural gorgonian to a plastic variant. The decision to switch from natural gorgonians to plastic may seem unconventional at first. What is a sea fan?

Gorgonians, also known as sea fans, are sessile organisms widely distributed in the world's oceans. Unlike the more familiar reef-building stony corals, gorgonians are not made of limestone but consist of a flexible, wood-like skeleton of chitin and protein. Their unique, tree-like structure gives them a fan-shaped appearance, which has led to their common name "sea fan." These fascinating corals are known for their exceptional beauty and play a crucial role in the marine ecosystem.
Why is it important for corals to remain in the sea?
Coral reefs are not only breathtaking underwater landscapes but also vital ecosystems that host and protect a variety of life forms. Here are some reasons why it is so important for corals to remain in the sea:
- Biodiversity: Coral reefs provide habitat for more than 25% of all marine species, although they only make up about 1% of the ocean's surface. Numerous fish, invertebrates, and other marine creatures use corals as spawning and feeding grounds.
- Coastal Protection: Coral reefs serve as natural barriers, protecting coastlines from erosion and storm surges. They mitigate the effects of waves and stormy conditions, thus preserving beaches and coastal communities from damage.
- Economic Importance: Many communities worldwide rely on tourism and fishing supported by intact coral reefs. Healthy reefs attract tourists who want to enjoy the unique underwater experience and provide rich fishing grounds for fishermen.
- Medical Research: Many marine organisms, including corals, contain bioactive compounds that have the potential to play a role in the development of medicines and therapies.
- Climate Change Mitigation: Coral reefs play a crucial role in absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. This helps to mitigate climate change as they act as "carbon sinks."

Our transition to plastic gorgonian: Protecting our oceans
Natural gorgonians once played an important decorative part in our ecosystem, but only a decorative part. The growing threats to the oceans required urgent action. Overfishing, pollution, climate change, and the effects of heavy metals led to an alarming decline in marine ecosystems, including gorgonians. To fulfill our environmental responsibility and protect marine health, we decided to test plastics as early as 2006. In 2017, the time had come, and we switched to artificial gorgonian.
It is important to face the challenges of environmental protection and find innovative solutions to preserve our seas. The importance of coral reefs as habitats, protection, and carbon sinks cannot be overstated. By supporting sustainable alternatives and protecting our oceans, we contribute to ensuring that these unique and vital ecosystems are preserved for future generations.
